Historical Background Director of the Strangeways Research Laboratory, 1929-1970

There is very considerable overlap between this material and that in the papers of the Strangeways Laboratory (SA/SRL), in the light of Dame Honor's very long connection with the Strangeways from 1923; as Director, 1929-1970. Her important individual contributions to biology are discussed in detail in the Biographical Memoir produced by Dame Janet Vaughan for the Royal Society. She was also associated with a number of other bodies in related research fields and had an international reputation.

It will be seen that most of the material in this collection relates to her extra-Strangeways activities and her own research there (as opposed to her activities as Director); although correspondence concerning her own research can also be found in SRL correspondence files, notably SA/SRL/G.17-19 relating to her work with Sir Edward Mellanby on Vitamin A in the early 1950s. Readers are advised to consult the list of the Strangeways archives, also that of the papers of Frederick Gordon Spear (PP/FGS) who was Dame Honor's Deputy. Other CMAC collections containing relevant material are the papers of Sir Peter Medawar (PP/PBM), who was a Trustee of the SRL, and those of Sir Edward Mellanby (PP/MEL). A file of correspondence between Dame Janet Vaughan and Dr Audrey Glauert of the Strangeways, 1986-87, concerning the Royal Society Biographical Memoir, can be found in GC/186.
